Julio Velarde has been Governor of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru since October 2006. In this role, he was named Central Banker of the Year for the Americas in 2020 and Global Central Banker of the Year in 2015 by the The Banker & The FT, amongst other notable honours.   

Gov. Velarde earlier served as a Director of the BCRP during 1990–92 and 2001–03. He also served as Chair of the BIS’s Advisory Council for the Americas (2018–20); Chair of the G24 on International & Monetary Issues (2018–19); Chair of the Board of the Centre for Latin American Monetary Studies (CEMLA; 2007–09); and Executive Chair of the Latin American Reserve Fund (FLAR, 2004–06). Additionally, he was Dean of the Faculty of Economics at the University of the Pacific (2001–03).  

Gov. Velarde holds an M.A. in Economics from Brown University, where he also pursued doctoral studies, and a B.A. in Economics from the University of the Pacific. He additionally pursued an advanced programme in economics at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy.
